Essentially we do two things. First, we detect joint dysfunction of the spine and cranium or the extremities (the arms and legs). Second, we assess the status of the nervous system. Joint dysfunction (subluxation) is very important because of the effect it has on the function of the nervous system. The nervous system will not function optimally if joint dysfunction (subluxation) is present within the body. An analogy often used is that joint dysfunction affects the nervous system much like trying to drive a car with the hand brake on. It is possible to get somewhere but it is hard work getting there and parts wear out faster.
Our job as chiropractors is to establish normal function of the nervous system by restoring normal function to the joints of the body. It is imperative that children’s spines be balanced when they are developing. Children develop fast and it is important that the nervous system is clear of interference so the child’s body can develop optimally.
Children play rough, run, tumble, fall, compete in team sports and live life to the fullest. Structurally these events place stresses on the joints of the spine and extremities. Carrying heavy school bags, prolonged computer and video game playing, falls from over 1 metre can all place strain on the body and nervous system. As a result, joint dysfunction and muscular tightness can occur.
